The Desert - Moreton Island

sand dunes

This 4WD Adventure tour to Moreton Island's Sand dunes is a must for all visitors. In our small but tough 4WD vehicles with local eco guide, we 4WD along the west coast of Moreton Island National Park. We look for dolphins, turtles, stingrays and dungongs with the guide by 4WD, whilst watching luxury boats and the playground of the rich and famous. Maybe spot Roger F or Livio.

After this short beach wilderness drive, the 4WD adventure really starts as we travel up the island 4WD tracks toward The Desert. Pass by huge Gum Trees, magical ferns and Grass Trees, hear stories of the local indigenous use of the many plants, look for wildlife with the guide. This 10km 4WD track is the most exciting on the island, we have small but tough 4WD to make sure we make it there and back with the one way road, means not a lot of tourists and less 4WDs. After this 30 minute adventure arrive the Desert- Moreton Island national park- our playground.

This 90 acres of mobile sand dune is moving north west at a rate of 1 metre a year, See the old forest where the dune was covering all plants, trees and shrubs. The Desert started on the East Coast of Moreton Island and is now getting closer to the west coast (only 2km away from Moreton Bay) The 46 hectares of the Desert is one of the biggest sand playgrounds in the world. It is made up of 30 different sand colours, a magical site and great photos. The tallest dune is over 35 metres high. Enjoy the thrill of sand surfing, sand boarding and sand tobogganing with your guide and Moreton Bay Escapes.

These fully guided adventure activities are fun for all ages and levels of fitness. Moreton Bay escapes provides all the gear and lessons to enjoy these nature based adventure activities.

sandboard
snorkel

Our Moreton Island Snorkel and Sandboarding tour starts with a luxury cruise across beautiful Moreton Bay to Moreton Island. On arrival we board our 4WD and drive off the ferry directly on to the beach. Moreton Island is the worlds third largest sand island of which 98% is a protected National Park, with no sealed roads, 4WD is the only mode of transport!

Travelling by 4WD along Middle Road, we pass through thick eucalypt forest, featuring beautiful Xanthorrhoea (Grass Trees) up to 250 years old on our way to The Desert, the home of Sand Boarding.

sandboard

Sand boarding and tobogganing is an awesome fun, high speed and high adrenalin activity and speeds of up to 50km/h can be reached. From beginners, young children and families, to the most adventurous adrenalin junkie, The Desert is the perfect place to learn, or fine tune, your sand boarding skills. This open sand dune is shaped every day by winds that form the perfect wave. Make sure you bring your camera to get plenty of impressive shots!

While a fresh picnic lunch is prepared by your guide take a moment to relax on the white sandy beach. Go for a leisurely walk or swim, or take some time out to sunbake.

After lunch we take you on a guided snorkel around the Tangalooma Shipwrecks. With 15 shipwrecks located just 50m off the beach, the Tangalooma Shipwrecks are home to one of Queensland’s most diverse marine eco systems. See a huge range of marine life including Butterbrim, blue and orange banded Parrotfish, Big Eye Trevally, Wobbegong, Blue-Tang Surgeonfish (Dory) and Clown Fish (Nemo)!

For those people who are not strong swimmers or do not wish to snorkel, Kayaking around the Shipwrecks is a fantastic alternative option. View these magnificent shipwrecks from above the water for a completely different outlook on Moreton Bay and its spectacular scenery. Kayaking may also be offered as an alternative to snorkelling should conditions be unfavourable.

Regrettably, we finish the day with our return to the ferry for a luxury cruise back to Brisbane.

"One day Moreton Island and two day Fraser Island trips"
'I've just finished the 2 day fraser island tour with Steve and I have to say it could not have been better. We saw everything we expected to see and more! It is pretty obvious that Steve takes a lot of pride in showing his guests around the island, often showing us places we would never have even heard of if it wasn't for him.

Also joined the 1 day tour to moreton island two weeks ago with ed and had a similarly great time. Ed was very knowledgeable about the island, stopping for bush tucker and giving us a great overall day.

If I could offer any advice to someone considering these two islands - if you're looking for a more personalised tour, ignore the noise about forward facing buses and go for sunrover with the land cruisers. These guys know where to go and when so that you get to the best spots at the best times. We had lake birrabean completely to ourselves (group of 5)!

Couldn't rate any higher, thanks Steve and Ed!'
